Summary

In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era。 As First Lady of the United States of America—the first African American to serve in that role—she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U。S。 and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments。 Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare。

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address。 With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms。 Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same。

Interesting to have a more personal perspective of what it is to be the First Family。 The doors it opens but also the restraints it causes on your freedom to live a normal life。It also sheds a light, through Michelle's story as a black woman in America, into how deeply race is intertwined in people's identity。 How it scars people with a lifelong insecurity; how a black woman has to constantly prove herself and her worthiness, even when she is the First Lady of the United States。 All in all, it s Interesting to have a more personal perspective of what it is to be the First Family。 The doors it opens but also the restraints it causes on your freedom to live a normal life。It also sheds a light, through Michelle's story as a black woman in America, into how deeply race is intertwined in people's identity。 How it scars people with a lifelong insecurity; how a black woman has to constantly prove herself and her worthiness, even when she is the First Lady of the United States。 All in all, it showcases Michelle Obama's applaudable ability to be sincere and vulnerable even when all eyes are on her and so much is at stake; and her incredible humility and dedication to use her platform to elevate the voices of silenced, marginalized communities。(and it also removes from your mind the idea that she would ever run for office) 。。。more

。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I was so inspired, challenged and intrigued by this book。 It helped me see the inner workings of our government from such a unique perspective- our country’s first African American First Lady and all of the weight that the title held for her。 I was truly in shock when the “80 degrees and sunny” example was mentioned and what that means for a community with high gang activity。 I definitely that think no matter your politics- Michelle Obama is admirable and I truly enjoyed reading this book and se I was so inspired, challenged and intrigued by this book。 It helped me see the inner workings of our government from such a unique perspective- our country’s first African American First Lady and all of the weight that the title held for her。 I was truly in shock when the “80 degrees and sunny” example was mentioned and what that means for a community with high gang activity。 I definitely that think no matter your politics- Michelle Obama is admirable and I truly enjoyed reading this book and seeing this personal side of her。 There was so much to explore- what it was like inside the White House, what the press and attention was (is) like, what her childhood and academic achievement was like, how her marriage to Barack came about and what it was like to date him, what it was like to be a young working mom and professional。 I loved learning about her heart as as a First Lady- to mentor those younger, especially girls, to grow a garden, to promote individual health, to modernize the White House in a good way, to bring real people (not just world leaders) into the White House。 I listened to this on audiobook, read by Michelle, and this seemed to really bring emotion into the story- especially when she shared about the loss of close friends and her father and the way the press tore her apart at times。 I also loved the way she described and got me thinking about how we make goals and look at the future and as she says “the world as it is”。 I highly recommend this book and I’m so thankful I committed to finishing it。 。。。more

I have a complicated relationship with this book。 I have so much respect for Michelle Obama and this book has increased that respect ten fold。 I think part of my issue is these aren’t the type of books I read。 The other issue being it was very drawn out and hard for me, specifically, to read。 I loved the beginning, going through her life as a child and relationship with her family。 I loved the way her mom raised her and her brother。 I hope to take that into my parenting。 But when it started gett I have a complicated relationship with this book。 I have so much respect for Michelle Obama and this book has increased that respect ten fold。 I think part of my issue is these aren’t the type of books I read。 The other issue being it was very drawn out and hard for me, specifically, to read。 I loved the beginning, going through her life as a child and relationship with her family。 I loved the way her mom raised her and her brother。 I hope to take that into my parenting。 But when it started getting into her job and the beginning of her and Barack’s relationship it started to drag for me。 Hence why it’s taken so long for me to finish it。 I decided to pick it up again yesterday and power through。 Overall I think it’s a book everyone should read。 It gives amazing insight into a family of color, into the life of a powerful woman, and a family that has endured so much。 。。。more

The first part was very inspirational。 It was nice to understand Michelle's story。 I'm specially impressed by how she describes her relationship with their parents。 It seems that they were able to do so much with so little。 I love to study about children/parents relationship, and hers seems to be a good example on how to deal with two childs。 It was lovely to know her better on this part of her narrative。The second part, when Obama goes to politics, I felt a little bit uncomfortable。 As if she w The first part was very inspirational。 It was nice to understand Michelle's story。 I'm specially impressed by how she describes her relationship with their parents。 It seems that they were able to do so much with so little。 I love to study about children/parents relationship, and hers seems to be a good example on how to deal with two childs。 It was lovely to know her better on this part of her narrative。The second part, when Obama goes to politics, I felt a little bit uncomfortable。 As if she was trying to explain some decisions that were criticized by media or their political opponents。 But it don't dismiss all the great learnings she puts in her book。 And as she says, she is always evolving, and becoming something new。 So overall it's a great book, well written and with an easy flow。The audio book narrated by her is awesome, it was lovely to hear her story narrated by her own。I'm not very adept to memoirs books, but some of them really matters, and she is definitely a woman that deserves to be heard。 。。。more

Her story resonated because it felt like my story; she survived the south side of Chicago, I survived the east side of Newark! I don’t consider myself to be political - so I was happy to find that this book isn’t about politics。 This is a great book about resilience, finding balance in your life, women’s empowerment, and using your voice to help others feel heard。 I found myself hanging onto every piece of advice she subtly incorporated into the telling of her life story!

As I drifted through the pages of this powerful memoir, my abstract idea of Michelle Obama became concrete, my admiration grew, and she now holds a very inspiring space in my eyes。

Margaret Trudeau used to say 24 Sussex Dr was the crown jewel of Canada’s penal system and I rather got the impression that Michelle Obama might have the same view of the White House。 Enjoyed the book。 My positive impression of Mrs。 Obama was confirmed on reading。

“Becoming requires equal parts patience and rigor。 Becoming is never giving up on the idea that there’s more growing to be done。”What a read - especially for a young woman of color。 Michelle Obama relayed a sense of relatability and so much of her story resonated with me - from her struggles as a minority girl growing up and feeling out of place, imposter syndrome, career crises, balancing routine and spontaneity and so much more, I have never felt so seen。Am I good enough? Yes I am。
